Explore wonders of Samtkhe-javakheti

Discover Samtskhe–Javakheti

Samtskhe–Javakheti is one of Georgia’s most mysterious and diverse regions, where nature, history, and culture blend in perfect harmony. If you want to relax surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, dive deep into history, and explore one of Georgia’s most enchanting areas, Samtskhe–Javakheti is the place to go. In just one day, you can experience the fusion of nature, history, and culture — an unforgettable journey that will stay with you forever.

The tour begins in Borjomi, one of Georgia’s most popular resorts. Its value lies not only in its famous mineral waters but also in its pristine air, lush forests, and picturesque scenery. A walk through Borjomi Central Park is a refreshing and peaceful experience, while tasting the mineral waters is a direct connection with nature itself.

The next stop is Akhaltsikhe, the cultural heart of Samtskhe–Javakheti — a place where history comes alive. Here you’ll find the restored Rabati Fortress, a remarkable example of medieval architecture. Its walls reflect both Eastern and Western influences that coexist in perfect harmony. Rabati has witnessed many battles and acts of heroism, and its atmosphere makes you feel part of that living history.

The highlight of the tour is Vardzia, a cave city and monastery complex built in the 12th century during the reign of Queen Tamar. This site is not only architecturally unique but also captivates visitors with its spiritual tranquility. Vardzia is a one-of-a-kind complex of tunnels, monastic cells, temples, and frescoes — each telling stories that echo through the centuries.

Vardzia is more than a monastery — it is a city carved into the rock. Its halls, galleries, water supply systems, and dwellings, all hewn by human hands, still stand as stunning relics of the past. Every step reveals the grandeur of Georgia’s Golden Age — the era of Queen Tamar, national unity, and cultural flourishing.

The complex once included about 600 rooms spread over 13 levels, all carved into the cliff. Although earthquakes and invasions have damaged parts of it, what remains continues to impress with its scale and architectural precision. The main church of Vardzia, the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin, is a true masterpiece carved into the rock. It preserves exquisite frescoes, including portraits of Queen Tamar, King George III, and King Lasha-Giorgi — rare and invaluable examples of medieval Georgian art.

This tour is perfect for those who wish to escape routine for a day, unwind, and immerse themselves in a journey through Georgia’s living history.
