Mtskheta

Explore wonders of Mtskheta

Discover Mtskheta — the spiritual capital of Georgia and a city listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is a place where history, spirituality, and ancient architecture merge into a harmonious whole.

The tour includes the following highlights:

Jvari Monastery — Built in the 6th century, this is one of the oldest and most architecturally significant churches in Georgia. It stands symbolically on the site where Saint Nino erected a cross as a sign of the spread of Christianity. From the monastery, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of Mtskheta and the confluence of the Aragvi and Mtkvari (Kura) rivers. This place fills visitors with peace and strength.

Svetitskhoveli Cathedral — Meaning “the Living Pillar,” Svetitskhoveli is one of the largest and most important cathedrals in Georgia. According to tradition, the Robe of Christ is buried here. The cathedral, built in the 11th century, preserves frescoes, architectural details, and royal tombs from different eras. This sacred site connects the past and the present in a deeply spiritual way.

Samtavro Monastery — Located near the historical center of Mtskheta, Samtavro dates back to the 8th–9th centuries. The monastery is remarkable for its simple yet solemn architecture and spiritual atmosphere. According to tradition, the great Georgian poet and cleric Shota Rustaveli once lived and served here. The monastery still preserves the energy and serenity of ancient monastic life.

Shio-Mgvime Monastery — A few kilometers from Mtskheta, nestled in a rocky gorge, stands Shio-Mgvime — one of the oldest monastic complexes in Georgia. It was founded in the 6th century by Saint Shio, one of the Thirteen Assyrian Fathers. The spirit of asceticism still reigns here, filling the place with an atmosphere of deep spirituality and tranquility. For centuries, Shio-Mgvime has been one of the main spiritual centers of Georgia.
