Kazbegi, officially Stepantsminda, is located in northern Georgia at the source of the Mtkvari River, 1,740 meters above sea level. The village was renamed in the early 20th century in honor of the famous Georgian writer Alexander Kazbegi, who was born here and vividly described the majestic Caucasus Mountains and the life of its people in his works.
